Arbuzov and Bohatyriova are tried in absentia, - Prosecutor General

Prosecutor General of Ukraine is implementing the procedure of trial in absentia to a number of officials of Viktor Yanukovych era, including former First Deputy Prime Minister Serhii Arbuzov, former Health Minister Raisa Bohatyriova, and her accomplice Oleksandr Stashchenko.

As reported by Censor.NET, this was announced by Prosecutor General of Ukraine Viktor Shokin in parliamentary Holos Ukrainy newspaper.

"The procedure of special investigation (trial in absentia) is realized for the first time.

"A proposal of in absentia conviction of former Health Minister Raisa Bohatyriova and her accomplice Oleksandr Stashchenko has been filed with a court over appropriation of budgetary funds in the amount of 6.5 million hryvnia ($295,000) during procurement of medicines and equipment. The procedure of in absentia conviction is also used against the former head of the National Bank of Ukraine, First Deputy Prime Minister and Prime Minister Serhii Arbuzov. He is suspected of stealing and embezzlement of public funds of the NBU in the amount of about 118 million hryvnia ($5.6 million)," Shokin said.

Prosecutor General also added that Arbuzov is currently wanted by Interpol. More than 200 million hryvnia ($9.5 million) were arrested at the accounts that belong to him and his wife. In addition, competent authorities of Latvia are currently conducting an international commission by the Prosecutor General of Ukraine concerning arrest of Arbuzov's funds of over $49 million, pursuant to court order.

As reported, law on trial in absentia for suspects who are hiding from prosecution outside of the country became effective in Ukraine in early 2015. The state plans to convict former president Viktor Yanukovych and members of his government, who fled the country, under this law.
