Shyrokyne again attacked from large caliber weapons - OSCE

Shyrokyne village, which is located near Mariupol, was shelled again after a couple of days of relative calm.

The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) observers have recorded the use of heavy weapons in this "hot spot". OSCE SMM Deputy Chief Monitor Alexander Hug announced, Censor.NET informs citing Interfax-Ukraine.

"The relative armistice in Shyrokyne, which began after the tripartite meeting of the contact group in Minsk on May 19, has ended. It was calm in this village May 22-23 but the attacks, including with the use of large caliber mortars resumed May 24. We have recorded more than 100 incoming and outgoing rounds only for one hour," he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Thursday.

Hug stressed that the shellings resumed after the explosion, which killed four militants of the so-called "DPR".

"This incident shows how unexpected the situation is while the violence could be resumed even during the cease-fire. This also demonstrates the importance of efforts on de-escalation and lifting of mines, as the explosion that has killed the militants was apparently an accident," he said.
