"Russian citizens Alexander Aleksandrov and Yevgeny Yerofeyev, captured by the SBU in the Luhansk region, were not active members of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation at the time of their detention May 17, 2015," the Russian Defense Ministry spokesperson Major-General Igor Konashenkov said.

"We have checked the information of the Ukrainian side - these guys have actually served in one of the detachments of the Armed Forces earlier and have military training. Moreover, I can confirm that we were addressed by the leadership of the Association of veterans of special forces with the request to contact with the General Staff of Ukraine through official channels to stop the abuse of their wounded comrades on the part of the SBU officers while extracting favorable confessions," Konashenkov said.

As previously reported, the Security Service of Ukraine refuted reports of the Russian media that the subversives, detained May 16 in the city of Shchastia (the Luhansk region) are not Russian servicemen and do not have citizenship of the Russian Federation.

As reported earlier, the SBU Counterintelligence Department officers interrogated the captive Russian military and established that they were career servicemen of the 3rd Special Operations Forces Separate Guards Brigade of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation (the military unit No. 21208 deployed in Togliatti city, Brigade commander Colonel S. Shchepin).
