Donbas cannot receive special autonomous status - Lutsenko

The Donbas can get more powers only on par with other regions of Ukraine within the process of power decentralization.

This was stated by leader of the Poroshenko Bloc faction Yurii Lutsenko on ICTV's Freedom of Speech program Tuesday night, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.

"The Donbas is an integral part of Ukraine. And it should not get any special status different from the rest of Ukraine. Crimea is an answer that a special status since 1991, which suddenly turned its regional council into the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea, sooner or later leads to separatism and opposition of a particular part of the country to the whole country," he said.

Lutsenko said that the Donbas can receive the same extended powers as all areas of the country. "This is called decentralization, empowerment of the Donbas, Kharkiv, Sumy, my native Rivne, Chernihiv or any other region. There shall not be a special region in Ukraine. They should have a maximum of authority, but no special preferences. No one is feeding anyone - we all live together in one state," he stressed.

"None of the militants are talking about the status of the Russian language or access to Russian culture. They do not know it, they know only the language of the Kalashnikov assault rifle. We have to worry about the integrity of Ukraine, which will have access to the entire culture of the world, but first of all to Ukrainian," Lutsenko said.
