Foreign vessels continue to visit annexed Crimea against the advice of the UN, but the scale of violations is growing more slowly than in the first half of 2014.

Censor.NET reports citing BlackSeaNews.

According to the monitoring, a total of 165 merchant vessels from 15 countries have touched at the peninsula over the past year. The most flagrant perpetrator is the Russian Federation (71 ships or 43% of the total number of violations) followed by Turkey (42 vessels, or 25.5% of the total number of violations) and Greece (23 vessels or 13.9%).

In this case, there were 118 perpetrators as of October 14, 2014, and 86 as of Aug. 3, 2014. These figures are included in the results of the annual monitoring.

Thus, the maximum level of violations of the embargo was observed in the summer of 2014. As the sources of Censor.NET stressed, the decrease of number of violations in the past six months cannot be explained only by the autumn-winter break in the navigation season.

"The Greeks, for example, are redirecting their routes, while Turkey and especially Russia are trying to strengthen maritime traffic with Crimea," BlackSeaNews Chief Editor Andrii Klymenko said.

At the same time, percentage of entries by ships owned by Ukrainian companies into Crimean ports has significantly increased in the spring. There were only two such cases before Oct. 14, and five more cases have taken place since then.

The BlackSeaNews insists that the identity of a vessel is determined not by the flag but by the ship-owner's and/or the vessel operator's profile.

It should be reminded that the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution March 27, 2014, according to which the United Nations and its specialized agencies, which include International Maritime Organization, are urging "all states, international organizations, and specialized agencies not to recognize any change in the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol, and ... refrain from any actions or steps that could be interpreted as the recognition of any such change of status" (Item 6 of the Resolution).
