Withdrawal of heavy weapons impossible as militants do not observe cease-fire - General Staff

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stressed that the withdrawal of the Ukrainian troops’ heavy weapons from the ATO area is out of question as of Tuesday because the enemy does not observe the cease-fire.

"The plan for withdrawal of heavy weapons has been agreed Feb. 21. Such a plan was signed by the Ukrainian and Russian parties as well as the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk republics. The first item of the agreement reads that the withdrawal will be started only after the fire in the ATO area will be ceased. But the militants are currently using heavy artillery near Shyrokyne village, so how can one talk about withdrawal?" General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine press service acting head Vladyslav Selezniov said.

He stressed that there should be no shelling recorded in the ATO area along the line of contact during 24 hours, but now one may observe "both assaults and heavy shelling." "We are waiting. Those positions, where we have to withdraw the equipment to, have long been prepared. Now the militants' goodwill is required," Selezniov said.

ATO speaker Andrii Lysenko said earlier Tuesday that the militants are not withdrawing heavy equipment from the demarcation line but on the contrary are redeploying it, in particular, closer to Mariupol.
