 5,000,000-hryvnia bail deposited for arrested ex-deputy Chechetov - lawyer

A bail was paid for the former Verkhovna Rada Deputy from the Party of Regions Mykhailo Chechetov.

Former Member of Parliament Mykhailo Chechetov, who was arrested on suspicion of promoting the adoption of "dictatorial" laws on Jan. 16, 2014, made a bail of 5,000,000 hryvnia (about $200,000), the suspect's lawyer Serhii Maliarenko said to Ukrainski Novyny, Censor.NET reports.

"The bail was posted today, but the prison authorities have not released him (Chechetov) so far," he said.

The lawyer stressed he was busy finding out why his client was not released from custody.

At the same time, the lawyer flatly refused to name the person who stood bail for Chechetov.

As reported, the Court in Kyiv has chosen a measure of restraint in the form of detention for Chechetov and announced bail of 5,000,000 hryvnia Feb. 21.

Earlier, Chechetov was served a notice of suspicion in committing a crime for his role in passing of laws on Jan. 16, 2014 by the Prosecutor General's Office Feb. 20. He is suspected of having signed a protocol of voting with false information being a member of the counting commission.
