 EU to consider Poroshenko’s proposal to deploy peacekeeper force in the Donbas

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini will consider Ukraine's proposal to send a peacekeeping force to monitor the cease-fire in the east of the state.

Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service Maciej Popowski informed at a press conference in Riga, Censor.NET reports citing ZN.UA

He confirmed the awareness on Poroshenko's proposal but said that more information is required to make a decision.

According to Popowski, any EU action should be based on a clear mandate and should be discussed by the member states.

The press service of the president of Ukraine informs that Poroshenko held a phone conversation in the so-called Normandy format. The parties agreed to coordinate their actions on fulfillment of the Minsk agreements reached Feb. 12 at the level of Foreign Ministers this week. The Ukrainian party insisted to include the issue of peacekeepers' involvement to the discussion, both on the collision line and the line of interstate border between Ukraine and Russia.

The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine approved the appeal to the UN and the European Union Feb. 18 regarding the deployment of peacekeeping force to ensure peace and security on the territory of Ukraine. President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko suggested during the NSDC meeting that the European Union Police Mission would be the best format of the peacekeeping force in Ukraine.
