Charges against former MP Yefremov are related to financing of Luhansk separatists – SBU Chairman

Charges against former head of the Party of Regions faction Oleksandr Yefremov are related to financing of separatists in the Luhansk region.

This was stated by Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Valentyn Nalyvaichenko in Kyiv after the opening of the memorial sign in honor of the Heroes of Heavenly Hundred in the territory of the SBU National Academy, Censor.NET reports citing UNIAN.

"There are materials that the SBU passed on regarding suspicion of financing separatism in the Luhansk region within the framework of the investigation of criminal proceedings in which suspicions have been announced to him," he said.

"All criminal proceedings relating to former deputy Yefremov are concentrated in the Prosecutor General's Office, including the transferred materials related to forgery and abuse of power as an official," he said.

According to Nalyvaichenko, the efforts of the SBU and Interior Ministry are currently focused on ensuring that Yefremov does not escape justice and comes to the Prosecutor General's Office, like today.

"He needs to answer the question in court, [to answer] regarding all charges, all suspicions that have been and will be brought against him," Nalyvaichenko said.

"I confirm that, together with the Ministry of Interior the SBU controls [the situation] to ensure that he does not escape justice and today comes to the Prosecutor General's Office and continues to come there to the investigator with a subsequent court hearing."

According to the head of the SBU, suspicions will also be announced to other MPs, to which law enforcement officers have questions.

Law enforcement officers detained Yefremov in Kyiv on Feb. 14. Kiev Pechersk district court ruled to arrest Yefremov on Feb. 16 setting bail at 3.6 million hryvnia.

Later, the media reported that Yefemov made bail and was released. At the same time alleged new criminal proceedings against Yefremov were reported. The reports stated that on Feb. 18 the suspicions in this may be announced and he will be detained.
