Murmansk contract soldiers complain of being forced to fight in Ukraine
On Feb. 9, Sergey Krivenko, a member of the Presidential Council on Human Rights applied to the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation to verify this information. He went to the Murmansk region to meet the contract soldiers. They said they had recently been transferred to a training range hundred kilometers away from their unit for combat coordination. "They were trained for other military occupations, such as infantrymen," Krivenko said. "And then their commander stood in front of them and said that they would be going on a mission to the Rostov region, where they would possibly cross the border to carry out military orders," he added. Krivenko also revealed an interview with the contract soldiers, who state that on Jan. 28, 2015, 59 soldiers were invited to meet with the command. The soldiers were informed that they were going to be sent to the village of Sputnik for a combat mission not according to their military occupation. They also were told they might be transferred to Rostov and Donbas. Eight soldiers refused and resigned. Afterwards, the soldiers were transported to the training area in tarpaulin-covered KAMAZ tracks without heating at a temperature of minus 10-15 °C. The soldiers did not have the necessary winter equipment and caught cold.

On Jan. 31, colonel Viacheslav Okanev arrived to Sputnik village to settle the matter. Journalist got an hour-long audio record of his conversation with the soldiers. The colonel repeated the story about Ukraine and duty of a soldier. "You all perform combat training missions... You are sent on a mission. If there is an order, you are to accomplish the mission on unfamiliar terrain. Ukraine is not an exception. I do not exclude that you might find yourselves in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions to provide direct assistance there," Okanev stressed.

In case of noncompliance with an order, Okanev threatened to cancel the contract. Viacheslav Okanev confirms the authenticity of the record, but insists that he was misunderstood.
Reporters asked the unit commander colonel Yuri Ryazantsev to comment the situation. He is sure that somebody just lied soldiers about Ukraine and promised not to send them to the Donbas.
After Okanev's visit the soldiers were allowed to return home for the weekend and to pick up winter equipment. But, according to the wife of one of the contract soldier, they are actually "locked up" at the Sputnik camp.
