 Poroshenko, Merkel, and Hollande called on Putin to withdraw troops from Ukraine


President Poroshenko held talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande which lasted more than five hours.

The parties supported the peaceful settlement of the conflict in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and expressed hope that Russia also shared this position.

"Petro Poroshenko, Angela Merkel and Francois Hollande discussed ways of implementing the Minsk agreements, which are the basis of conflict settlement and agreed upon general suggestions on next steps," the statement reads.

It is also noted that the three leaders called for immediate cease-fire, the withdrawal of foreign troops and heavy weapons from Ukraine, the border closure and the release of all hostages.

President Poroshenko urged European leaders to facilitate the release of Ukrainian pilot Nadiya Savchenko.

The parties also discussed the possibilities to resume dialogue in Normandy format.
