Kremlin has to make its choice and withdraw its troops from Ukraine - Kerry

The United States supports a diplomatic solution to the conflict in the Donbas: the Russian Federation must withdraw its troops from Ukraine, close the border, and fulfill the Minsk agreements.

Russia must withdraw its troops and tanks from Ukraine. The cease-fire and negotiations are the only way for Russia to avoid international isolation.

This was stated by the U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry today in Kyiv at a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Censor.NET reports.

Kerry noted that he and President Poroshenko discussed threats to Ukraine: "We talked about the largest threat that Ukraine faces today, and that is Russia's continued aggression in the east. There's no other way to call it. We are not seeking a conflict with Russia - not the U.S., not Ukraine, not EU community, this is not what this is about. We want a peaceful resolution and Russia's commitment to ending the bloodshed, by honoring the agreement it signed - the Minsk agreement." He noted that everyone hopes that Russia will use diplomatic means to resolve the matter.

"We can't close our eyes to tanks coming across the border" or to "Russian fighters coming across the border," Kerry said.

According to Kerry, the U.S. hopes for a peaceful solution to the conflict. He noted that President Obama asked him to come to Kyiv and him and Vice President Biden to join a meeting in Munich to meet again with President Poroshenko and U.S. allies and friends in order to emphasize the choice of a diplomatic and peaceful solution to the problem. He also noted that Russia has to make a choice, and not just in words, but also on the actions.

He emphasized that Russia should commit to a cease-fire in Ukraine withdrawing heavy weapons from the demarcation line. The secretary of state once again noted that Russia should withdraw its troops and weapons from Ukraine and prevent the infiltration of the militants from the territory of the Russian Federation. Kerry also said both sides should release the prisoners.

The U.S. is ready to assist all parties to achieve these results. The cease-fire and negotiations are the only way for Russia to avoid international isolation, he concluded.
