The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said that Ukraine is a sovereign state and it will decide by itself whether to join NATO or not.

"I think we should remind our Russian colleagues that Ukraine is an independent, sovereign state. And only the people of Ukraine have the right to decide what course should our country follow and what organizations to join or not to join. We do not need tips from outside and furthermore we don't accept pressure on these issues," speaker of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yevhen Perebyinis said, commenting the desire of Russia to get guarantees from Kyiv that Ukraine will not join NATO.

According to him, Ukraine would also like to get a hundred percent guarantee from Russia that it will cease to interfere in the internal affairs of the country, to send its troops, and to annex parts of the Ukrainian territory.

"Meanwhile Russia is not able to provide such a guarantee and if its not obvious to Moscow, it causes outrage across the entire world," the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.

Earlier, Russian president's press secretary Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with BBC that Russia needs an "absolute guarantee" that Ukraine will not join NATO.

However, according to Peskov, no one has still given Russia such a guarantee, and this situation makes Moscow worry and forces to take precautions. At the same time Vladimir Putin press secretary accused the West of trying to "encircle" Russia.
