The Ukrainian party got permission from the Lefortovo prison to visit the Ukrainian prisoners of war, the sailors. Kateryna Zelenko, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, stated this during today’s session, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.
"Recently, we have got the permission from the authorities of the Lefortovo prison to visit by the Ukrainian consul prisoners of war in Moscow today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. We hope that this visit will be divided in a couple of days, and the consul will be able to meet every prisoner in person", the spokesperson said.
According to Zelenko, Ukraine has not received any medical document on the health condition of the POWs yet, there are only descriptive data, which do not cover everything accurately and do not tell what medical treatment the sailors need.
According to the lawyer, the defense objected this expertise. At the same time, considering the fact that investigation does not want to react positively to the objections of the lawyers, they have filed appeals concerning the lawyers’ presence during the expertise.
On November 25, the coast guard ships of the Russian Navy attacked the ships of the Ukrainian Navy, which have been carrying out a scheduled transition from Odesa port to Mariupol port in the Sea of Azov. Ukrainian ships were rejected passage via the Kerch Strait, Russian coast guards opened aimed fire on them.
All 24 sailors on board were captured and delivered to Moscow – 21 of them were delivered to Lefortovo remand center, the rest came to the hospital of Matrosskaya Tishina prison.
Facing an extension of the sentence term, Ukrainian POWs detained in the Kerch Strait refused to testify in Lefortovo court. Sailors were distributed into six groups, four people in each. On January 15, 2019, Moscow's Lefortovo district court decided to keep 20 Ukrainian sailors in remand until April 24. On January 16, the court extended the detention term for another 4 sailors.
