Verkhovna Rada bans Russian observers from monitoring elections in Ukraine

The Verkhovna Rada has adopted a law, which bans Russians from serving as official monitors during Ukraine elections.

As reported by Censor.NET, 232 MPs voted for the law.

The law introduces amendments to the existing laws on the election of the president, on the election of MPs and on local elections.

Under the new law, a citizen (subject) of a state, which is recognized by the Verkhovna Rada as an aggressor or an occupying state, cannot serve as an official monitor from foreign states and international organizations during the presidential elections, parliamentary or local elections in Ukraine.

As reported earlier, head of the election observation mission of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) Ambassador Peter Tejler said that Ukraine's intention to ban Russian observers from monitoring the presidential elections is inconsistent with the OSCE norms.
