"In a document submitted by a group of almost 70 senators from the Republican and Democratic parties, lawmakers urge the President of the United States to use the provisions of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018 to strengthen the capacity of Ukraine Armed Forces and provide additional aid for the country through the corresponding programs of the State Department and the Pentagon, especially with the aim of increasing Ukraine’s naval capabilities and averting further Russian aggression," the message reads.
The Senate also urges the U.S. President to conduct a joint operation with America’s allies to ensure freedom of navigation in the Black Sea to show support for internationally recognized borders, bilateral agreements and the principle of safe passage through the Kerch Strait and the Sea of Azov.
Besides, senators appeal to NATO with the request to increase the presence of the Alliance in the Black Sea to monitor the situation. Lawmakers also urge the U.S. allies and partners in Europe not to let Russia Navy ships in their ports for resupply and refueling.
The document also emphasizes that the sanctions against Russia continue to apply and strengthen until Russia’s aggressive actions stop.
Senators also welcome and support the resolution of the European Parliament as of Dec. 12, 2018, condemning escalation in the Kerch Strait and calling for the cancellation of Nord Stream 2 due to its threat to Europe’s energy security.
