Epiphanius: Ukrainian, Russian parishes to restore friendship eventually

Head of the Orthodox Church in Ukraine (OCU) Epiphanius calls for putting no pressure on those who want to stay with the Russian Orthodox Church and hopes that good relations will be eventually restored.

Censor.NET reports citing Epiphanius’ Facebook page.

"The Russian Orthodox Church will oppose [the OCU]. They used to do it, they are doing it now and will continue to do it. Besides trying to convince other churches not to recognize the Ukrainian one, Moscow attempts to drive a wedge between faithful Ukrainians," he said.

When asked for how long will Ukrainian and Russian churches coexist, the metropolitan said that there would be a certain number of parishes in Ukraine subordinate to the Russian Orthodox Church.

"There will be a certain number of parishes in Ukraine that will be subordinated to the Russian Orthodox Church. It is reasonable and we have no objection to this. The Russian Orthodox Church may take care of its people in Ukraine. Those who decide to stay with Russia’s church should not feel pressured. These parishes should have equal rights with those belonging to the OCU. Our relations will eventually get better, our people will restore friendship and peace," Epiphanius said.
