Epiphanius denies OCU’s subordination to Istanbul

Orthodox Church in Ukraine (OCU) Metropolitan Epiphanius stressed that the Ukrainian church is not subordinated to Istanbul.

He mentioned this at the opening of Vasyl Lypkivskyi monument in Cherkasy, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"Our opponents say that we have not obtained real autocephaly and are, in fact, subordinated to Istanbul. This is not true. Tomos proves that we are the independent Orthodox Church in Ukraine. According to Tomos, we occupy the honorable 15th position among other local orthodox churches. I believe after this act by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew we will gain recognition from other churches too," said Epiphanius.

He also mentioned he received Tomos in the name of all orthodox Ukrainians, and that autocephaly is a big responsibility.

He greeted Ukrainians on the Epiphany Day and thanked the president of Ukraine for his effort in obtaining Tomos.

As reported, Epiphanius declared Feb. 3 the date of his enthronement .

President Petro Poroshenko and Epiphanius have opened a monument to the founder of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church (UAOC), Metropolitan Vasyl Lypkivsky, in Cherkasy.
