Military prosecutor of the country’s central region said commenting on the probe into exploding Molot mortars, Censor.NET reports citing a statement by spokesperson for the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine, Andrii Lysenko.
"The Military Prosecutor’s Office of the Kyiv Garrison is investigating allegations of misconduct by military officials of the Main Military Office of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine while fulfilling a state contract which led to the purchase of poor quality mortars M 120-15 Molot.
"The ongoing comprehensive forensic examination is intended to verify the physical condition of the mentioned mortars, find out whether their performance is as specified by the manufacturer and whether it is safe to use them in combat operations.
"In addition, the State Audit Service is checking whether the MoD rationally used public funds. The investigators also check whether firms involved in manufacture were not bogus and whether they did not overstate their volume of work and its cost.
"No evidence of mortars’ poor quality mentioned in the case files has been found so far.
"One of the main causes for explosions of Molot mortars is considered to be double loading and violation of the live-firing exercise procedure by the military personnel. The pre-trial investigation of these facts is ongoing."
