Detained suspects in attempt on activist Mykhailyk repeatedly travelled to Russia, including recently, MP Anton Herashchenko says

The lawmaker believes that the attack could have been masterminded by the anti-Ukrainian forces.

As reported by Censor.NET, Secretary of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Legislative Support of Law Enforcement, MP Anton Herashchenko said on air of Channel 5 that the persons detained as suspects in attempted assassination of Odesa activist Oleh Mykhailyk took numerous trips to Russia, including recently.

According to Herashchenko, the investigators have doubts as for the motives for the attack on Mykhailyk.

"I can say that these people have repeatedly traveled to the Russian Federation, including recently. The investigation is still to find out what they were doing in Russia, by whom and what exactly they were encouraged to do," Herashchenko said.

The MP says one of the theories of the investigation is the anti-Ukrainian forces’ effort to escalate the situation in the region.

"The anti-Ukrainian forces sought to have activists be killed or hurt in Odesa to subsequently accuse the authorities, the prosecutor's office, the police, the SBU of failure to take action. This theory is a major one. It’s being checked since there was no personal enmity between Mykhailyk and these three Georgian nationals," he said.

According to Herashchenko, the investigators check the detainees’ involvement with the underworld, ties with Georgian crime bosses and Georgians who temporarily occupied senior positions in the law enforcement agencies of the Odesa region.

As reported, an identified person shot at public activist, leader of the city organization of the party Syla Lyudei (Power of the People) Oleh Mykhailyk on Osipov Street in Odesa late on Sept. 22. He was taken to hospital in grave condition.

Members of the Security Service of Ukraine, who were drawn to the investigation of the assassination attempt, have interviewed Mykhailyk’s inner circle and the witnesses to the attack.

Syla Lyudei party says the Odesa local authorities are behind the attack on its member. As of the morning of Sept. 23, Mykhailyk regained consciousness. The doctors plan to extract the bullet after his condition will be stabilized. The public activist was given security.

Three suspects in the attack on activist Mykhailyk were apprehended in Odesa on Sept. 25. All three are Georgian nationals. According to the media reports, they confessed during questioning to having committed the crime.

A handgun was found at home of one of the detainees which the investigation believes could have possibly been used in attempt on Mykhailyk.
