German Chancellor Angela Merkel sees no need to call off the sanctions that the EU imposed on Russia.

She announced on Friday, Oct. 24, in Brussels at the EU summit. This is reported by Censor.NET citing Deutsche Welle referring to dpa agency.

Merkel said that the European Union has come to the conclusion that the Minsk September 2014 agreement between Ukraine, Russia, and pro-Russian separatists has not been observed.

Therefore, "we see no possibility to talk about the lifting of the sanctions," Merkel explained. The cease-fire regime is not obliged in the east of Ukraine, thus more than 300 people were killed there since the Minsk agreements came into force, the agency reports.

According to diplomatic sources, members of the summit in Brussels decided not to call off the penal measures against Russia, and at the same time urged Moscow to respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as to take responsibility for the implementation of the Minsk agreements.
