"Ukraine's fundamental position is as follows: we have not asked and are not going to ask the permission of the aggressor country or Putin for our European and Euro-Atlantic integration. This is exclusively the sovereign right of the Ukrainian people," the head of state emphasized.
He recalled that according to the opinion polls, most Ukrainians support the European and Euro-Atlantic movement of Ukraine as a key factor in ensuring the security of the state. According to the president, NATO, unlike the Budapest memorandum and other documents, turned out to be the only possible and effective tool for ensuring national security.
"So there is nothing we will ask Putin, we will move forward to Europe. We will not allow anyone to threaten Ukraine, including the Sea of Azov," the head of state emphasized. He recalled that the plan of actions and reactions, ranging from military and economic, from political to legal and judicial, was defined during the NSDC meeting recently to make the Russian Federation take responsibility for violation of laws and international law.
Poroshenko also ruled out the possibility of peace on conditions of capitulation of Ukraine: "Peace on the terms of capitulation, peace in which the Ukrainian territory is given up, peace in which the Ukrainian state is given up, peace when Ukraine gives up is not a peace for Poroshenko and not a peace for Ukraine" .
The president stressed that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are the key to peace. "The stronger our army will be, the sooner peace will be achieved. The stronger the international solidarity with Ukraine is, the faster peace will be achieved. The more severe the sanctions will be in relation to the aggressor country, the sooner the peace will be achieved," the president stressed.
Answering the clarifying question about the exact date of peace, the head of state remarked: "I will not promise the exact time. This is not fair. I will not support populists who are trying to cheat people. I call for a responsible discussion and a great responsibility for the fate of the state, for its future".
The president stressed that the Ukrainian authorities are doing everything for Ukraine to have a strategic perspective of an organized and effective security system in the country, including through the law on national security.
The president once again apologized to the families of the dead and wounded soldiers for giving them hope for peace in a few hours or days 4.5 years ago. "It was very difficult to imagine the situation in the Armed Forces, but it is very well known in Zhytomyr, because even one of the best brigades, the 95th Zhytomyr brigade, had enormous difficulties with all kinds of provision. As for the army as a whole, the army simply did not exist: it was plundered, sold out, undressed, disarmed, without funding. And we actually met the enemy without an army," the Poroshenko emphasized. He recalled that only the efforts of volunteers in the first stage helped stop the enemy.
"We could not imagine that (Russian aggression - ed.). We began to fight with the terrorists, let them have weapons from the Russian military stores, ideological reinforcement of the aggressor country, but we did not expect the aggression of the regular troops of Russia," the president noted.
