"Putin's Goal Is to Freeze Ukraine. We Should Be Ready for the Worst" - Yatseniuk

Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk believes Russia has no intention to sign interim gas agreement with Ukraine.

The prime minister said this on Tuesday when visiting Yavoriv field in the Lviv region, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainska Pravda.

"If there is no agreement, then, I will be honest, I believe that Putin does not wish to sign any agreement. His goal is to freeze Ukraine. And we should be ready for the worst-case scenario," Yatseniuk said.

However, according to the prime minister, the government has already tied up $3.1 billion for gas payments in case Russia does sign the agreement.

"Before the agreement is signed, before we have the document, it is too early to talk about any solution to "gas issue". Although, knowing the Russians, we can sign the agreement, pay the money, and receive nothing. I know those Russian tricks," Yatsenyuk said.

Another solution to this issue is the verdict of Stockholm arbitration on interim price for Russian gas for Ukraine, which verdict is expected in the end of November, the prime minister said.

Yatseniuk noted that 17 billion cubic meters of gas are currently in tanks, and if the EU opens the reversal, it will make the season easier to go through.

The prime minister also announced that the goverment has oil reserves which can be remade into fuel oil, and this will provide Ukrainian heat power plants with 200,000,000 tons of fuel.

As reported, Russia stopped gas supply to Ukraine on June 16. Kyiv refuses to pay the Moscow-set price of $485.50 per 1,000 cubic meters and requests to lower the price.

The European Commission offered Kyiv and Moscow to sign interim agreement for gas supply which agreement would be effective until the decision by the Stockholm arbitration.
