Suspected crime boss Yatsyshyn, detained in Zhytomyr region July 28, placed in pre-trial custody

Koroliovskyi district court of Zhytomyr imposed 60-day pre-trial detention on suspected leader of Nikopol-based crime ring Yan Yatsyshyn.

As reported by Censor.NET citing Hromadske, Yatsyshyn is charged with illegal handling of firearms. The investigators believe he is also involved in drug trafficking.

At his bail hearing, the prosecuting attorney said that Yatsyshyn was previously repeatedly convicted on charges of illegal firearms handling (Article 263). Moreover, he is being tried by the Zhovtnevyi court for committing crimes punishable by the same article. Besides, Yatsyshyn has repeatedly evaded justice and, therefore, the prosecutor believes there is a high risk that the suspect will continue committing crimes and absconding.

On July 28, police said they apprehended the leader and a member of one of Ukraine’s largest crime rings - Yan Yatsyshyn and Ruslan Lisanov.

Yatsyshyn lost control of his vehicle and crashed while allegedly heading for Zhytomyr to help his friend and ring member Lisanov, who was arrested on charges of illegal handling of firearms and attempted murder (articles 263 and 115 respectively). The police officers, who came to the scene, searched his car and found firearms, drugs and cash after which detained him on charges of committing offense punishable by article 263.

The defendant said that the illegal stuff found in his car did not belong to him but was planted. According to him, he was heading for western Ukraine with his friend.

Having heard both sides, the judge ruled to place Yatsyshyn in pre-trial custody for 60 days with an option to be bailed out after posting 140,000 hryvnia (about $5,190).
