"Autocephaly is not a matter of the Ukrainian Orthodox alone. It's a matter of our independence. It's a matter of our national security. That’s why Moscow and its fifth column in Ukraine show so fierce resistance. We should not assume that Tomos is in the bag. We must pray and fight to obtain it," the president said.
As reported, the local Ukrainian Orthodox Church may be granted the Tomos of Autocephaly as early as in July.
"There is every reason to believe that in the near future, I think it will be in July, we will get the Tomos and autocephaly," Filaret said on May 31.
On April 17, President Poroshenko said Ukraine was closer than ever before to creating an autocephalous united local church.
Pursuant to the instruction of Poroshenko, on April 20, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine Rostyslav Pavlenko visited Istanbul and handed over to His All-Holiness, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew the Appeal of the President of Ukraine on granting the Tomos of Autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.
He also handed over the Verkhovna Rada’s resolution on the support for the President’s Appeal to the Ecumenical Patriarch.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew also received the appeals of the hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox churches on granting the Tomos of Autocephaly to the Orthodox Church in Ukraine.
The 1030th anniversary of the Christianization of Kyivan Rus-Ukraine will be marked on July 28, 2018.
