Poroshenko on looming US, Russian presidents' summit: "I wish Mr Trump well in his efforts to bring Mr Putin back into line"

The meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia next week in Helsinki will confirm that Ukraine is on the frontline of European and transatlantic politics.

As reported by Censor.NET, Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko said in his latest Financial Times article.

"This 'Ukrainian week' will send a powerful message that will be heard in Brussels and beyond — most importantly in Helsinki. Based on our agreed approach of doing nothing on Ukraine without Ukraine, I wish Mr Trump well in his efforts to bring Mr Putin back into line. Knowing the Russian president as I do, I would bet that he craves our defeat. But that is not an option, and never will be," he said.

Ukraine's president notes that meeting between presidents Trump and Putin will take place on the 28th anniversary of the Ukrainian parliament’s declaration of state sovereignty.

According to him, the challenges the country faces are immense, but this is not the time to ease up the pressure on Russia.

"To do so would be a confession of weakness. Instead, we should make it clear that the values and principles of the free world will not be compromised. ...In Brussels this week we shall make it clear that the price for Russia of its aggression will keep rising until the Minsk agreements are implemented and the occupation of Crimea and the Donbass region is ended. The time for concrete action has come," Poroshenko wrote.

The meeting between Trump and Putin is expected to be held in Helsinki, Finland, on July 16.
