Mortar tube explosion at Rivne firing range could be caused by double loading, top military prosecutor says

Double loading could have caused the explosion of mortar tube during live-fire exercise at the Rivne-based shooting ground.

Main Military Prosecutor Anatolii Matios wrote on social media, Censor.NET reports.

"... First of all, I offer my condolences to the entire 128th Brigade and parents of the deceased. The exercise participants gave varying testimonies. No one can say for sure whether a malfunction of the mortar occurred after the first shot was fired or the explosion was caused by double loading. Investigators believe that the mortars had their double loading prevention devices disabled which made the double loading possible.

"The blast occurred immediately after the next loading. The nature and circumstances of the mortar tube explosion also suggest this. The actions of the independent spotting observer tentatively bore signs of negligence: the distance between mortars was 8 meters instead of required 20; the depth of the dugouts was also seriously substandard. The detailed findings will be available following the appropriate expert examination," Matios said.

As reported, three military were killed and nine others were injured in explosion of the tube of 120 mm Molot mortar in Rivne on July 6.
