Police chief: dangerous criminals who stole millions of hryvnia from Kyiv businessmen released on bail

Kyiv-based court released on bail crime ring members who were arrested last August on robbery charges.

Kyiv police Chief Andrii Kryshchenko wrote on social media, Censor.NET reports.

"Last August, Kyiv police apprehended a ring of robbers (four members) who attacked businessmen: the smallest amount they stole was 300,000 hryvnia (about $11,320 at current exchange rate). In some cases they stole several million. They also used force against their victims, and sometimes even firearms that were seized during their detention," he wrote.

According to him, all four perpetrators were arrested while their actions were identified as crimes committed by an armed gang.

"The probe into four counts of their criminal activities (robbery, banditry, grand theft, two of the suspects were additionally charged with possession of drugs and illegal handling of weapons) was completed; the case files were referred to the Sviatoshynskyi district court in February. Separate probes were initiated into other crimes they were charged with," Kryshchenko said.

However, all the crime ring members were released on bail.

"And this is where things get interesting: the court released two ring members on 168,000 hryvnia bail in May. Moreover, the court released two other defendants, including the ring leader, on 211,000 hryvnia bail the other day. The criminals who organized an armed gang "hunting down" businessmen in downtown Kyiv went at large... The perpetrators facing up to 15 years in prison were cut loose," Kyiv police chief summed up.
