Poroshenko signs bill making military service more attractive for Ukrainians

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko signed the bill "On amending certain laws of Ukraine on the improvement of specific issues of performing military service by the citizens."

As reported by Censor.NET citing the presidential press office, the bill amends the following Ukrainian laws: "On the social and legal protection of servicemen and members of their families"; "On military duty and military service"; "On Internal Service Regulations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine".

"The implementation of this law will better motivate the citizens to perform military service," the statement reads.

The adopted amendments allow: to increase the age of admission of those willing to become cadets of higher military educational institutions from 23 to 30 years which, in turn, will provide possibility for the participants in the Anti-terrorist operation and Joint forces operation to go to military colleges and subsequently continue performing military service as officers or sergeants; to raise up to 60 years the age limit for the women liable for military service who are on reserve duty as it has already been applied to males, which will ensure gender equality and increase the mobilization pool; to continue performing military service under extended contracts for a period of 1 to 10 years during a special period, which will help increase the number of those willing to perform military service on short-term contracts; to be discharged or sign new contracts for those servicemen whose contracts have been compulsory extended after expiry during a special period and those servicemen who concluded the contracts before the end of the special period and declaration of demobilization.

"The law also provides opportunity for servicemen recognized as unfit for military service due to health issues to continue their service. The combat experience, moral and professional qualities and motivation to perform military service that such servicemen possess can be applied by them regardless of their health condition on military posts that do not require physical efforts," the statement reads.
