EU expects Ukraine to make State Bureau of Investigations, anti-corruption court operational soon

EU ambassador to Ukraine says the European Union expects State Bureau of Investigations (SBI) and the anti-corruption court to start working within the shortest possible time.

Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli told a briefing in Kyiv, Censor.NET reports citing LB.UA.

According to him, many new agencies have been established in Ukraine over the last three to four years so it is now critical to ensure a clear separation of these bodies’ functions. He says this particularly concerns the State Bureau of Investigations which could be able to rebuild confidence of the Ukrainian society in law enforcement by successfully investigating high-profile corruption cases.

Therefore, he said, it was vital for the EU that the SBI become operational as soon as possible.

The diplomat noted that the efficient cooperation between the SBI and the Prosecutor General's Office was also extremely important for the EU.

Mingarelli stressed that the EU would continue to insist that the Security Service deal with national security issues, counter terrorism instead of fighting against economic crime.

As reported, the Ukrainian parliament passed the bill on anti-corruption court creation on June 7.
