Over 20 million Ukrainians traveled to EU since visa-free entered into force a year ago, - State Border Guard Service

More than 20 million Ukrainian nationals crossed the EU border over the year that passed since liberalization of travel requirements which is 2.3 million more than in 2016.

As reported by Censor.NET citing 112 Ukraine, June 11 marks one year since the EU-Ukraine visa-free regime was introduced. This measure stipulated by the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement spared those Ukrainians who own the biometric passports from having visas in them while crossing the border with the EU.

The State Border Guard Service reports that over the previous year, more than 20 million Ukrainians crossed the EU border. According to the agency's Deputy Head Oleh Slobodian, that is 2.3 million more than in 2016.

In 2016-2017, there were 17.7 million cases of EU border crossing by Ukrainians. In 2017 and until now, the number already excessed 20 million, he said.

According to Slobodian, 555,000 Ukrainians used their new biometric IDs to travell to the EU. "We observe a rapid increase in the number of those who hold the biometric passport. There are two reasons for that: the beginning of the summer tourist season, and the approaching expiration date of the Schengen visas in the old Ukrainian travel passports," he said.

The system of biometric data monitoring started operating in Ukraine on Jan. 1, 2018. Citizens of 70 countries undergo the procedure.
