Verkhovna Rada Committee to consider request to prosecute MP Ponomariov over attack on journalists

At today’s meeting, the Committee on Rules of Parliamentary Procedure and Support to Work of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is going to consider the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office to the parliament to grant consent to convict MP Oleksandr Ponomariov of a criminal offence.

As reported by a parliamentary correspondent for Censor.NET, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) seeks to bring the lawmaker to account for attack on journalists on the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada.

The PGO said May 18 that it filed a motion to the Verkhovna Rada to obtain its consent to prosecute Ponomariov.

On Feb. 7, ex-member of the Party of Regions parliamentary faction Oleksandr Ponomariov snatched a smartphone out of hands of the parliamentary correspondent for Censor.NET Ivan Marusenko when the journalist was filming his conversation with another lawmaker on the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada.

The editorial board of Censor.NET believes the act was obstruction of media activities which is subject to criminal prosecution.

It is noteworthy that the incident took place in a public place.

On the same day, the local prosecutor's office initiated criminal proceedings against a Member of the Ukrainian Parliament Ponomariov for obstructing journalists’ activities including a correspondent for Censor.NET Ivan Marusenko.
