Babchenko's "assassin" appears to be Ukrainian Orthodox Church preacher, Right Sector activist Oleksii Tsymbaliuk. VIDEO&PHOTOS

Father Aristarkh (secular name Oleksii Tsymbaliuk) - a volunteer, Right Sector activist, and a former celibate deacon of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) and subsequently Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate, - says he is the one who was hired to assassinate journalist Arkady Babchenko which he reported Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) about and eventually took part in the special operation.

As reported by Censor.NET, Tsymbaliuk wrote on social media that it actually was the first time when the SBU responded proactively to the actions of the Russian secret services.

"It's great that there are talented young operatives in the SBU who you can quite safely report about a contract hit. One can tell them everything without fear of being sold to the person who actually ordered the hit. Honestly, I have no idea what impact this will eventually have on my life. I feel a little bit nervous, to tell the truce. But I know for sure that the operative who has been handling this matter on his own, the case investigator – are men of integrity. These are the people who really take great pains to make the life in Ukraine more safe…," Tsymbaliuk said.

"I write this without concealing my true identity as it makes no sense following the release of the footage showing me receiving the advance payment for the assassination of a person without my voice being altered. And most importantly, I’m grateful to all my friends for their support. Together we are strong. There will be no interviews in the near future since I have signed a non-disclosure statement," the SBU special operation participant said.

Tsymbaliuk joined the priesthood in 2006 and took the name of Aristarkh. First he was a celibate deacon in the Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate and subsequently of the Kyiv one. Disappointed with both, he became a hermit monk in the Zakarpattia.

Aristarkh is still a monk regardless of the fact that he volunteered for the Russian-Ukrainian war. He once decided that he was not righteous enough to help Ukrainian military with a prayer and went off to war. Tsymbaliuk began his path in the Donbas as a member of Hospitalier medical evacuation force.

Hromadske.doc published as story about Tsymbalyuk in January 2017.

Russian writer and war correspondent Arkady Babchenko reportedly died of gunshot wounds to the back after he was attacked entering his apartment in Kyiv’s Dniprovskyi district on May 29.

On May 30, it turned out that Babchenko was alive and unharmed while the SBU conducted successful special operation to detain those who plotted attempt against him.
