SBU caught Russian diggers collecting intel on Ukrainian underground facilities. PHOTOS

Operatives of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) apprehended Russian nationals attempting to gather intelligence on Ukraine’s critical underground infrastructure on behalf of the aggressor state.

As reported by Censor.NET citing the statement by the SBU press office, the law enforcers found that two Russian nationals from among the so-called "diggers" - underground exploration subculture – were recruited by the Russian secret services. Their handler instructed them to gather information about underground facilities located primarily in large industrial and capital cities of the European Union and Ukraine.

SBU operatives detained foreigners while they were attempting to gain unauthorized access into one of the Kyiv subway stations.

The law enforcement officers patted them down and found climbing equipment, cameras, and tools necessary to bypass security systems.

"Standing up for the European values of the rule of law, the Ukrainian side decided to deport them to the Russian Federation given that the Russian ‘diggers’ committed no crime and actively cooperated with the investigation. Both young people will also be barred from entering Ukraine for a five-year period," the statement reads.

"The SBU once again calls on the Russian secret services not to imperil the residents of Ukraine along with its guests as well as the Russian nationals, who visit Ukraine, in particular, on the brink of the Champions League final, by their subversive activities in our country," the agency said.
