Ukraine’s TV and Radio regulating authority to carry out ad hoc inspection of Inter TV channel over violations

The National Council of Ukraine on Television and Radio Broadcasting has scheduled an ad hoc inspection of Inter TV channel over May 9 concert, which according to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) violated the law on Television and Radio Broadcasting.

Council Head Yurii Artemenko said at an agency meeting, Censor.NET reports referring to Interfax-Ukraine.

SBU believes that the statements by the concert hosts Andrii Domanskyi and Anastasia Daugule bear signs of propaganda that distorts certain aspects of Ukraine’s history, discredits the processes taking place in the country that are associated with decommunisation and establishment of the national identity.

Artemenko said that besides the motion of the Security Service, the Council received a great number of letters and complaints from the citizens and also a formal statement by a political party saying that the contents of the show aired by Inter TV channel, namely the Victory Day concert, assaults the dignity of Ukrainian citizens, stirs up hostility and encourages state integrity undermining.

The Council is going to check the TV channel for compliance with the requirements of the law and take an appropriate decision after that.

As reported, the members of National Corps and National Squads NGOs gathered outside the Kyiv-based Inter TV channel headquarters on the morning of May 9. They demanded that the controversial ‘propaganda statements’ voiced during the Victory Day concert be cut away and the channel be deprived of its license. The activists pasted over the building with yellow stickers saying "Inter will be ours," "Let's make Inter Ukrainian," and "Let’s make Inter more patriotic."

A piece of the concert dedicated to the Victory Day, which popped up on the Internet on May 9, showed the TV hosts saying: "We cannot let the streets of our cities to be named after fascist criminals and their portraits being carried by the torchlight processions marching across our capital city with impunity."

The concert that sparked protest was aired at 8:30 p.m. on the same day.
