Mykolaiv region governor steps down pending probe into top gun Voloshyn’s suicide. VIDEO

Head of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration, Oleksii Savchenko, filed a petition to Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko on his temporary resignation for the period of the probe into suicide of Mykolaiv International Airport acting head, former operational pilot Vladyslav Voloshyn.

Savchenko told reporters outside the building of the Presidential Administration, Censor.NET reports citing Savchenko's post on Facebook.

"I asked the president of Ukraine to temporarily remove me from the office to avoid any political speculation. I guess this choice I made was conscious, deliberate," Savchenko said.

"I wrote the relevant statement and formally submitted it today," the governor told journalists and showed the document saying that there was no way Poroshenko could avoid granting his motion.

"A tragic incident took place on March 18, Vladyslav Voloshyn, acting head of the Mykolaiv Airport passed away. I’ve heard quite a number of different statements on this. In order to avoid any speculation, I’ve made such a conscious decision, "Savchenko added.

The building of the Mykolaiv Regional Council was placed under heavy police protection on March 29 after activists announced a large-scale rally demanding dismissal of incumbent region’s Governor Oleksii Savchenko pending investigation into Voloshyn's suicide. As reported, acting General Director of Mykolaiv International Airport, Vladyslav Voloshyn, shot himself on March 18. The investigators believe the pressure might have been exerted on him by the leadership of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration including Governor Savchenko.
