Infrastructure minister deems inevitable increase in rail travel cost being unchanged since 2014

Ukraine’s state-run railroad operator Ukrzaliznytsia is unlikely to have enough time to arrange an increase in tariffs for passenger rail travel before April 1 but it is inevitable as prices of tickets have not been raised for a long time.

As reported by Censor.NET, Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Volodymyr Omelian said on air of Channel 5.

"Objectively, they will be unable to do it by April 1 but the increase is inevitable. Because despite the fact that all other related costs have grown, including the cost of electric power and repairs of the completely worn-out rolling stock of Ukrzaliznytsia, the prices [for railroad tickets] have not been increased since 2014," the minister said.

"I don’t feel very comfortable in this situation because I would still like the railroad operator to increase the quality of passenger services first, upgrade its cars and then drive the prices up. These steps must be taken simultaneously," Omelian said.
