Interior Minister Avakov set to remove police protection from courts

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Arsen Avakov is outraged by the court's ruling to cut loose the individual who shot and injured the police officer outside the Solomianskyi district court of Kyiv on Feb. 15.

The minister wrote on social media, Censor.NET reports.

"A judge of the Shevchenkivskyi [district] court [of Kyiv] ruled to set free the man who inflicted a gunshot wound to the policeman preventing the members of the fringe from entering a court. The court has actually offer encouragement for using firearms against the policeman by considering it not a serious crime. This disgraceful decision obliges me, as the minister in charge of the National Police and the National Guard, to respond with adequate measures," Avakov said.

"I demand that the High Council of Justice instantly respond to such actions of the judge; that the prosecutor's office and the Court of Appeals immediately take a fair decision regarding the armed attack on the police officer," the minister stressed.

"Earlier today, I asked the prime minister to convene an extraordinary meeting of the Cabinet. I just don’t see how the police and National Guard can engage in extraordinary function of protecting the courts in such conditions.

"The article 160 of the Law of Ukraine on the Judiciary and the Status of Judges stipulates that the courts must be protected by a specialized Court Guard Service. The creation of this service has been stonewalled by the officials of the State Judicial Administration for several consecutive years while it is not clear what the public funds allocated for this purpose have been spent on.

"Taking into account the stonewalling by the judges and the Judicial Administration, I am going to move the government draft resolution to remove police and National Guard protection from the courts. Let them now guard themselves on their own during the transition period as far as they consider the use of firearms against a policeman a minor misconduct," the top law enforcer said.

As reported, a policeman received a gunshot wound during a clash outside the Solomianskyi district court of Kyiv as its judges were imposing a pre-trial restriction against Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov on Feb 17. The gunmen was apprehended while the injured police officer was hospitalized.
