Former Russian MP Ponomarev: If resistance was offered in Crimea, it wouldn’t be annexed, no war would be waged in Donbas

Former State Duma Deputy Ilya Ponomarev says that it would be possible to prevent occupation of Crimea and the Donbas if Ukraine resisted Russia's aggressive actions in 2014.

As reported by a correspondent for Censor.NET, the former Russian lawmaker said at the hearing of Yanukovych treason case in the Obolonskyi district court of Kyiv.

According to Ponomarev, it was clear that the Russian authorities "feared that Ukraine will offer resistance, open fire, but this never happened."

"If resistance was offered, I think that either annexation or the war in the Donbas would never happen," he said.

On Feb. 14, 2018, the Obolonskyi district court of Kyiv held the 35th hearing of the case against Ukraine’s ex-President Viktor Yanukovych charged with high treason and complicity in waging of the war where former State Duma Deputy Ponomarev gave his testimony.
