“Occupying country can in any way be peacemaker,” – Defense Minister Poltorak on Russia

Ukraine’s Defense Minister Stepan Poltorak believes that the Russian Federation has not renounced its aggression against Ukraine but its extent will depend not on Ukraine and Russia alone.

As reported by Censor.NET, Ukraine’s top military said in an interview with Voice of America.

“The UN peacekeeping mission can be successful but certainly not on the terms offered by Russia. The occupying country can in any way be a peacemaker," he said.

Poltorak said that Russia's common strategy was to create a problem and then sit at the negotiating table and act as a peacemaker.

"Russia first seized our Crimea, then Donetsk and Luhansk, and after that came to Minsk offering its peacekeeping services and ways of addressing this issue," he stressed.

The minister noted that the best option for Ukraine would be to have Russia leave Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk while an undisguised aggression against Ukraine would be the worst-case scenario.

He also said that it would not be easy for Russia to overrun the country with its tanks as Ukraine would show fierce resistance.

The minister expressed a view that the Russian leadership had not renounced its aggression but its scale would depend not on Ukraine and Russia alone.

"It (the extent of the aggression – Ed.) depends on the United States and other countries. The more pressure the countries and the world leaders will put on Russia to make it fulfill international obligations, the higher the chances of avoiding open aggression against Ukraine," he said.

"I would like to thank Kurt [Volker] in the first place for his highly-efficient job: he makes great efforts, he works very hard to make the peace prevail in Ukraine," the minister said adding that, unfortunately, this depends not on U.S. Special Envoy for Ukraine Volker alone.

According to him, the success of the UN peacekeeping mission and other issues depend on the Russian Federation which is reluctant to recognize its involvement in the conflict.
