EU ambassador calls on to urgently make Ukraine’s anti-corruption court operational

EU Ambassador to Ukraine Hugues Mingarelli believes that the anti-corruption court must be created in Ukraine as soon as possible.

As reported by Censor.NET referring to UNIAN, the diplomat said on air of Ukrainske Radio.

According to the ambassador, significant progress in the fight against corruption has been made last year. He says that much is still to be done despite adoption of new laws and creation of new agencies as corruption remains a very serious disease that impacts the entire Ukrainian society.

Mingarelli stressed that, first of all, the newly created anti-corruption agencies – the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), the National Agency for Corruption Prevention (NACP) of and others – must be strengthened in order to advance in the fight against corruption. The much talked about  anti-corruption court must also start operating as soon as possible, he said.

The diplomat also says that it is critical for the NACP to receive all the means necessary to verify and screen e-declarations of government officials as soon as possible while the requirement for the civil society activists to declare their incomes must be immediately lifted. He believes that the fight against corruption is an endless process and it is not enough just to create anti-corruption bodies - it is necessary to change the people’s mentality. According to the ambassador, the process of changing mentality definitely takes a very long time while a fierce struggle is underway between those who actually make efforts to change Ukraine, change this mentality, reform the country, and those who want everything to remain the same as in 1992-2014.
