Infrastructure Minister Omelian: Ukrzaliznytsia loses at least 15B hryvnia annually over corruption

Ukrzaliznytsia, the state-owned railroad operator, has no less than 15 billion hryvnia (about $535.7 million) embezzled annually.

As reported by Censor.NET, Ukraine’s Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelian voiced this figure in an interview with UMN.

"According to my estimates, at least 15 billion hryvnia is being annually siphoned off from the Ukrzaliznytsia budget into private pockets. Construction of the high-speed rail link connecting Odesa and Kyiv costs 15 billion hryvnia. Next year’s 15 billion hryvnia can cover the construction of the railroad between Kyiv and Lviv with rail gauge similar to the one in Europe. Two years without theft would result in brand new transport corridor connecting us with Europe," Omelian said.

He stressed that the potential use of this funds is worth struggling for Ukrzaliznytsia’s future.
