SBU detains Russian secret agent in Cherkasy region

The operatives of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) apprehended an agent of Russia’s foreign intelligence service in the Cherkasy region.

As reported by Censor.NET referring to the SBU press office, the law enforcers found that a native of the Russian city of Samara who have long been living in the Cherkasy region and obtained Ukrainian nationality was recruited by the Foreign Intelligence Service of the Russian Federation back in 1996.

After Russia waged its aggression against Ukraine, his handlers tasked him to infiltrate the patriotic movements. The SBU operatives recorded that the agent carried out subversive activities in Cherkasy region and Kyiv and provided intelligence to the Russian secret services.

Following the outbreak of hostilities in eastern Ukraine, the agent also recruited mercenaries for combat operations carried out by the terrorists of the self-styled "Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics." He was apprehended in a special operation conducted by the SBU counterintelligence officers. The law enforcers searched the place of his residence and found cell phones with contacts of his handlers and computers showing that he submitted intelligence to the Russian secret services.

 The operatives indicted the detainee on espionage charges. The pre-trial investigation is underway.
