PGO: 9,167 officials detained for bribe-taking this year alone

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Yurii Lutsenko says the law enforcers have detained 9,167 corrupt officials in 2017.

As reported by Censor.NET referring to NewsOne, Ukraine’s senior law enforcement official said on air of ICTV.

"This year showed result exceeding all previous years. Jointly with our colleagues from the Interior Ministry and the SBU, we detained 9,167 bribe-takers red-handed. The indictments against 2,855 corrupt officials were referred to the courts which convicted 1,534 of them," he said.

The prosecutor general noted that the names of the majority of corrupt officials were not well known but the number of detainees showed the effectiveness of the law enforcement agencies.

According to him, only 100 of the detained corrupt officials were actually sentenced to several years in prison. Nevertheless, he believes such result to be unprecedented.

Lutsenko earlier said that the PGO was willing to enlist the support of British Scotland Yard to investigate the case of Saakashvili.
