 National Police: Clash resulting in casualties on both sides broke out after activists refused to hand over Saakashvili

Spokeswoman for Kyiv police Oksana Blishchyk dwelled on the police and SBU joint raid on the tent camp outside the Verkhovna Rada early on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

As reported by Censor.NET, she told NewsOne TV channel.

"As soon as they were spotted by the activists, they immediately explained the purpose of the law enforcement officers’ stay near the tent camp. However, the activists started instigating the police and attack the law enforcers. Therefore, the tear gas was employed against them and a clash broke out. We have information that four policemen were injured as a result. Six civilians also reportedly received injuries," she said adding that the doctors had provided no details to the police on those injured.

According to her, a part of the activists stays in the camp while the rest of them led by a people's deputy "are in the lobby of the Kyiv Hotel armed with batons and sticks."

"Obviously the activists were not willing to hand over Mikheil Saakashvili and, accordingly, a clash broke out," the police spokesperson said.

As reported, a clash between law enforcers and supporters of the former Odesa region governor took place outside the Ukrainian parliament early Dec. 6 when police tried to storm the tent camp in order to locate and detain Saakashvili.

Early Dec. 5, the law enforcers detained Saakashvili on charges of assisting crime ring members. His supporters blocked off the paddy wagon with the detained politician inside and later released him. During the search in Saakashvili's apartment, he went up to the roof of the house and was apprehended by the law enforcers there. 

Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yurii Lutsenko later said that runaway oligarch Serhii Kurchenko funded Saakashvili's activities in Ukraine.
