 NATO to Increase Its Direct Action Capability in Baltic Region - Merkel

The Alliance summit in Wales will take measures to improve the quick reaction ability in the Baltic region, which does not violate the existing agreements with Russia.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced this at a press conference in Berlin on Wednesday, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinfrom.

"We shall take a number of measures at the summit, which will in particular include direct action capability improvement in the Baltic region in compliance with the NATO-Russia framework agreement provisions," Merkel said.

The head of the German government said that she understands the "concern" of the Baltic countries in connection with the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, but reminded that the Alliance is ready to guarantee the protection of the sovereignty of its member countries under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, including Poland and the Baltic countries. However, Merkel added that she "assumes" that the territorial integrity of these countries will not be violated.
