Poroshenko: Our Goal is Peace but not at any Cost and under any Conditions. We will Stand up to an Armed Aggressor

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko considers beginning of a dialogue in eastern Ukraine as a positive step.

He stated this at a meeting of representatives of local governments and public authorities called the Dialogue Day, Censor.NET reports with reference to UNIAN.

"I know that the fact of such consultations was differently perceived by society. There are "hawks," demanding swift and hard military action. Others are demanding a large-scale compromise "just to avoid war." This is my answer to both sides: our goal is not war; we did not start it, Ukraine did not start it. Our goal is peace. But I stress that not peace at any cost and under any conditions. Our hand will be steady in repelling an armed aggressor who threatens the unity and integrity of our country," Poroshenko said.

Poroshenko stated that he had to make a difficult decision to unilaterally cease fire in eastern Ukraine.

"The dialogue regarding the implementation of the President's plan to resolve the situation in the Donbas has begun," Poroshenko said and reminded that the peace plan consists of 15 items, one of the main ones being immediate demilitarization of the region and regaining control of the Russian-Ukrainian border.

According to him, the first steps of the peace plan include restoration of local authorities, restoration of central broadcasting in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions to counter the "information poison flowing from other channels these days."
