Lavrov Explains Russian Ties with Donbas Terrorists by "Common Soviet Past"

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says that Russia does not pursue geopolitical interests in the conflict in the east of Ukraine and Russian politicians explains the connection with terrorists in the Donbas common Soviet past.

It is reported by Сensor.NET citing ITAR-TASS.

"Russia in the situation in Ukraine is not guided by geopolitical ambitions, the priority is to save lives," Lavrov says.

On the question of contacts between the leaders of the breakaway "republics" and some members of the Russian political and business elite, Lavrov said that these relations are explained by common roots dating back to the Soviet Union.

"As regards the connection, they can be explained very simply: about 90% of the establishment came from one country - the Soviet Union," he said.

Lavrov also said that Russia supports the efforts of Kyiv for the national dialogue in Ukraine to resolve the conflict.

"We support the efforts that are now underway to begin, let it be at least a mediated dialogue," he said and added that it is necessary to go on to direct negotiations.
