Party of Regions Claims Getting 40 Deputies, Chechetov Reports on the Progress

Nearly 40 independent deputies wrote an application for membership in the Party of Regions faction in the Verkhovna Rada of the seventh convocation.

Party of Regions Mikhail Chechetov made the claim in an interview to KP-Ukraine.

"Nearly 40 independents have written applications to join our party, so that we will have a sole majority in the new parliament," he said.

"We will be able to pass the laws quickly and smoothly," said Chechetov.

The Regions deputy asserted that the independents wrote the applications voluntarily without any pressure. The independents however are of a different opinion.

"It is that just some were promised assistance in business matters, the other various posts, others still - money for electoral campaigns," said one of the independents.

At that Chechetov did not name any independents who have already decided to join the Regions. As to the questions about whether such applications were written by current Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn, the ex-Minister of Emergencies Viktor Baloha or Economy Minister Petro Poroshenko, the deputy refused to answer it.

"Maybe someone has not had the time to write an application for membership in our party or a politician is out of ink, paper," he said.

The independents themselves dream to create their own faction and be a separate "combat unit."

"We need to negotiate and create an independent faction," said the self-nominated Viktor Bondar.

At the same time, political experts argue that such ambitions of the newly elected deputies will hardly be realized in life since it will be very difficult to agree upon a single leader for such a faction.

"If they come up with a format in which there will be several leaders of the faction, for instance Poroshenko, Baloha, Zhvaniya than such a union is theoretically possible. But most likely, they will create one or two powerful groups of deputies and will maintain their game 'under the dome'.

In particular, they may offer their people for governors of the regions from where they were elected," said political analyst Volodymyr Tsybulko.

The Verkhovna Rada of the seventh convocation will have five parties and 225 deputies elected in the plurality districts.
